Inside/Outside
INSIDE/OUTSIDE is moving online!
Inside/Outside, featuring contemporary paintings by eight Burmese artists, had a great response! We’ve sold 18 pieces and counting! Since it’s rather difficult to ship the work back overseas, I’m opening a temporary online store to sell the remaining pieces. Hopefully we’ll sell out. If you couldn’t make it to SateFL!GHT gallery, check out the remaining paintings here! You can purchase works through Paypal, shipping included!

CLOSING PARTY FOR INSIDE/OUTSIDE - CONTEMPORARY ART FROM BURMA
Saturday, November 19, 4-8 p.m.
SateFL!GHT Gallery, 2332 S. Presa
(NOTE: This is NOT at FL!GHT Gallery, this is a different, though nearby space. Scroll down for map.)
November 10, 2011 — Wow. We have received so much love and community support from San Antonians and Texans! At the opening, we sold more than a third of the works on display. Nearly everyone who has made an appointment to view the show privately has bought a piece. I want to celebrate our generous, discriminating art scene with a closing party, the last chance to view the show in its entirety and a great time for patrons to pick up previously purchased work. Several paintings are still for sale, including Soe Naing’s large works from his “Creatures” series:
I also want to share an interesting fact regarding the pricing of the artwork: When I lived in Burma, I comfortably existed on $60 a week. By chance most of the prices are in multiples of $60, and because of the generosity of the SateFL!GHT gallery, who lent space and expertise, and S.M.A.R.T. (Supporting Multiple Art Resources Together), all the proceeds go back to the artists, courtesy of Pansodan Gallery in Yangon, Burma. This means that one single purchase could fund an artist for one week to four months and likely a good deal longer, as my expenditures reflected extravagances like taking a taxi cab or eating at international restaurants that most Burmese do not afford themselves in day-to-day life.

UPDATE
September 24, 2011 — We’re starting to get some great press for INSIDE/OUTSIDE!
San Antonio magazine features some of the pieces and a first-person narrative by yours truly in their October issue. I described the unique experience of working with Pansodan Gallery in Yangon to put together INSIDE/OUTSIDE, featuring 30 paintings by eight Burmese artists. For more information on the artists, click here. To view some of the larger works on view, click here. For more information on Pansodan Gallery, click here or friend them on Facebook.
Another really exciting development is a partnership with SMART Art, which will help us cover framing/canvas stretching costs. For those who don’t know, SMART stands for Supporting Multiple Art Resources Together, and the organization is dedicated to raising awareness of the developmental impact of the arts on San Antonio through art education programming and civic projects.
I can’t say thanks enough to Andy Benavides at SMART and Justin Parr at SateFL!GHT, our hosting gallery, for making this happen in San Antonio. Their generosity means very affordable prices on all the pieces, which range from $60 to $800. Not only is the goal of the show to expose these artists to an American audience, but the sales of these works can help fund the artists for several months. Plus, it helps keep the doors open at Pansodan Gallery, one of the few places dedicated to encouraging contemporary art in Burma.
I can’t wait for the opening on Saturday, October 22, from 5-9 p.m. at SateFL!GHT Gallery, 2332 S. Presa. Below is a map and more information from the press release about the show!

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (Aug. 23, 2011) – New FL!GHT gallery off-shoot SateFL!GHT is pleased to announce INSIDE/OUTSIDE, a group exhibit of contemporary Burmese paintings, showing from Oct. 22-Nov. 19. Opening is from 5-9 p.m., Oct. 22 at SateFL!GHT, 2332 S. Presa St.
INSIDE/OUTSIDE exposes viewers to artwork created in Burma, or as it is sometimes called, Myanmar. Curator Callie Enlow worked with Yangon’s Pansodan Gallery, one of the very few galleries in the country dedicated to contemporary art, to select work from eight noted professional artists. Pansodan has also collaborated with galleries in Australia and England, but never before in the United States.
The show presents a rare opportunity for the artists to gain exposure outside of the small Burmese art community. Under a repressive authoritarian government for nearly 50 years, Burma’s creative class has suffered along with the rest of the country. Due to strict economic sanctions by much of the Western world and personal financial hardship related to Burma’s average annual salary of $1,200, artists are rarely able to present their work outside of the country, while inside Burma, there are just a handful of galleries and few collectors. Thanks to partnerships with FL!GHT and SMART, most of the proceeds will go directly to the artists.
What art training and exposure most Burmese do have is limited to classical techniques; art criticism and theory are not taught, and there are no museums or galleries that import modern art from other areas of the world. Therefore, the contemporary works shown in INSIDE/OUTSIDE are astounding in their abstraction, proving that creativity truly knows no bounds. More information on the individual artists coming soon!
